fourth round of stimulus checks update

Is the fourth round of stimulus checks a possibility?

In July and August, the IRS issued more than 169 million payments during the third round of direct stimulus aid, with another 2.3 million people received the $1,400 checks last month.

These stimulus payments don’t seem to be enough. Some lawmakers are pushing for the fourth round of stimulus checks in the form of recurring payments that last until the pandemic ends. An online petition calling for payments of $2,000 a month is close to reaching 3 million signatures.

The last update on the possibility of a fourth-round came in late May, and things have been quiet since that time.

The Biden administration isn’t commenting on the possibility of the fourth round of stimulus checks. Still, the massive stimulus bill passed in March included $350 billion in aid to states and local government. This money is currently being used in individual states to make additional direct payments to struggling Americans.

A few states have taken it upon themselves to hand out extra money to residents, many of those states reaching into their own pockets.

Here are some examples:

FLORIDA: Florida has been sending out $1,000 checks to educators in the state and paying first responders like including police officers, paramedics, EMTs, and firefighters, up to $1,000 as “an acknowledgment of the many sacrifices” during the pandemic.

CALIFORNIA: California is preparing to distribute a second round of stimulus checks thanks to a huge budget surplus. The first round went to residents making less than $30K a year. The next round of stimulus checks from “The Golden State” would go to residents earning $75K or less. The fourth round of payments will go out in September and give each California resident $500-$600. Households with dependent children will receive an additional $500.

NEW MEXICO: New Mexico’s stimulus program devoted $5 million to low-income residents who weren’t eligible for federal stimulus checks, with more than 4,000 households across the state receiving up to $750 in emergency financial assistance.

TENNESSEE: The state legislature passed a bill earlier this year to pay teachers a one-time payment of $1,000 ($500 for part-time educators) and checks are expected to be mailed out at the end of this year.

States that had previously sent out stimulus checks to residents include Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, and New York.
