What is unclaimed money?
Unclaimed or “abandoned” property refers to property or accounts within financial institutions or companies that has seen no activity (or contact with the owner) for one year or longer.
Unclaimed money can take many forms, including checking or savings accounts, stocks, uncashed checks (such as dividends or payroll), refunds from insurance policies, trust distributions, CDs, the contents of safe deposit boxes, and annuities.
When does money become “unclaimed”?
After a designated period of time called a “dormancy period” with no activity or contact, money or property becomes “unclaimed” and must be turned over to the state. The dormancy period varies from state to state, but the government must then make the property publicly available, usually through a state-run website.
How Can You Actually Get Your Unclaimed Money?
The first step in recovering unclaimed money is obviously figuring out if any is owed to you.
