Fame is a tricky business, and there’s no telling when it might walk through the door of an aspiring artist’s life, just as when it could leave. But to be present for fame when it flips your life script upside down and amplifies the exposure of your life for so much of the world to then play audience to- that’s got to be a trip, no? What goes into making that first splash, though?
How do you find the door into a life of fame, or does it simply present itself when you are ready? What a mystery, and isn’t the business of the mystery itself a fun business to speculate on? These 15 people who became famous for ridiculous reasons are from many eras, and the reasons that they got famous are universally unexpected.
1. Phineas Gage
Are you having a tough day? Joshua survived an iron rod passing through his skull. This was a grim and dicey introduction for him into the whole business of being studied in the neuroscience field. When the student becomes the teacher, or maybe becomes the studied?
2. Joshua Norton
Joshua Norton went ahead and declared himself Emperor of the United States, and then thereafter became a beloved character out in San Francisco.
3. Donna Griffiths
Bless you, Donna. Those are three words that were said in that sequence over 900 times. Yeah, Donna’s claim to fame was a prolonged sneezing fit that lasted for the tune of 976 times. Isn’t that something?
4. Ann Hodges
So, Ann Hodges got struck by a meteorite while dozing off for a nap. If that isn’t a waking nightmare kind of a vibe, I’m not so sure what is.
5. Violet Jessop
I wonder if Violet ever tried her luck on land. Because as things stand in the historical record, Ms. Jessop survived both the sinking of the Titanic and the Britannic.

6. Charles Osborne
This is one of my personal worst fears. That is, once the hiccups start, they don’t have any plans to stop. Osborn was checked into a stay at the Hotel California of Hiccups for 68 years. Ouch.
7. Michael Lotito
You ever heard someone say, “that person’s got a bone to pick with that person”? Well. Michael Lotito had a scrap of metal to pick with a plane. Lotito was famous for eating chunks of metal, and a poor plane wasn’t discounted in that “journey” for Lotito.
8. Shridhar Chillal
Chillal wasn’t about that nail tech, particularly. Unless there was nail polish, filing, etc. involved. Otherwise, though, Chillal grew their nails out for 66 years. No one can take that away from them.

9. John Evans
John Evans was born with gifts, and one in particular that we know of involves balancing heavy things on his head. For instance, a mini car for 33 seconds.
10. Ashrita Furman
Some people are built different. That’s a common slogan assigned to uncommon people, and Furman is a great case study. Furman loved to go all in on a wide range of unusual world records. In this case, that included pogo-sticking for a literal mile. What a trip.
11. Joseph Pujol
Some people like to “cut the cheese”, which means to fill a room with flatulence. And some people, for whatever reason, can develop more control over how that flatulence comes out. What a tricky thing.

You might be familiar with Candace Payne if you can bring to mind any of those memories of a certain “Chewbacca Mom” laughing endlessly, and then literally laughing her way right into a position firmly entrenched in fame. Some people are just born with it, and it is the laughter that lights up a room.

There was a video at one point in time of a famous “yodeler,” as we call one. Mason Ramsey apparently has a gift in this field of life and was able to light up plenty of rooms with it.

Sometimes all you have to do is ask the right question. Or just a question at all. Well, Ken Bone ascended to unprecedented meme heights when he asked a question at a presidential debate, as he did.
15. Paul Vasquez
I mean, look, Paul, I don’t blame you. Double rainbows are no joking business. They’re a stunning atypical presentation by nature, and to witness one is to be momentarily possessed by the infinitely enjoyable gift of wonder. So, Paul, I get you. Awestruck and all.
