In the time of Marie Kondo sparking joy by organizing people’s lives, it should come as no surprise that one of the best side hustles for 2023 turns out to be the second gig of the organization of homes.
During the pandemic, 38-year-old adjunct professor Dr. Julia Raz transformed her side hustle into a full-time business that pays her six figures. Raz believes her profession as an adjunct professor of communication and media studies assists her in teaching people how to part with unnecessary items.
More Than Just Organizing
Raz assists “self-described hoarders or self-described shopping addicts” to everyone in between. Raz claims her services provide more than just physical organization – she feels as though she provides guidance to clients dealing with the emotional journey of letting things go.
“In a lot of ways, it’s very similar to therapy,” Raz tells CNBC’s Grow by Acorns.
Raz considers herself somewhat of a therapist, and one client said that she “saved their marriage” by teaching “them how to communicate with their partner about the management of the things in their home.”
One of the most difficult situations is letting go of possessions that belonged to a loved one who passed away.
“They feel stuck because there’s this stuff from someone that they lost and it’s really burdening them,” the professor explains. “They may not be able to work in their room because that stuff is still there. And when I come in, they’re finally able to start processing through it.”
The Side Hustle That Pays Way More Than A Full-Time Job
The business boomed during the pandemic, with Raz earning approximately $103,000 by decluttering and organizing homes. Her Los Angeles-based side hustle business – Golden West Organizing – employs over half a dozen part-time employees and typically brings in more than $10,000 per month.
“I want to empower you to become your best self through decluttering and organizing,” Raz says on her website.
Raz claims she provides clients with “nurturing guidance to home organization.”
“I take a warm, compassionate, and non-judgmental approach in understanding the needs of each of my clients, to help them become the best version of themselves through decluttering and organizing all the little things in life that can weigh us down,” Raz promises.
“I think that all of us struggle with maintaining order and balance in our lives,” Raz exclaims. “And decluttering, to me, is the simplest way to find peace and order in your life.”
