Nostalgic hobbies like collecting stamps or coins can seem like a dated pastime, but really, for the true fans of vintage items, these forgotten pursuits can bring in considerable cash. With more and more collectibles gaining value over time, certain items now sell for substantial amounts at auctions or online marketplaces. From the old coins on into the antique books, these are 15 collector hobbies that continue to sustain noteworthy value.

Collectors have forked over millions of dollars for vintage watches, but one doesn’t have to be a millionaire to collect these timepieces then as a hobby. Of course, if you’re then going to find an old Rolex or a Patek Philippe at an estate sale, you’ll also likely want to snap that watch up immediately.

2. Sports Memorabilia

Vintage sports memorabilia like signed baseball cards, jerseys, and sports equipment like helmets and bats, can go on to command ridiculous amounts from collectors that are drawn to relics that capture the iconic moments in sports history. What that sports memorabilia ends up accounting for can take on tremendous amounts as well.

3. Stamps

Stamps from rare postal issues or with printing errors can command high prices, with some reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars. Case in point: A rare British Guiana stamp that fetched nearly $10 million ($9.5 million to be exact) at auction. For collectors, acquiring rare stamps can feel like treasure hunting — and the right finds can indeed be worth a fortune.

4. Coins

Old coins — especially those with historical significance or minting errors — are highly valuable, with some selling for hundreds of thousands (or even millions) of dollars. In 2021, a Double Eagle coin from 1933 sold for $18.9 million, showcasing the potential payoff for serious collectors. Coin collecting also attracts history buffs searching for relics of past civilizations.

5. LEGO Sets

You can find pricey LEGO sets in pretty much any major department store, but the real value lies in vintage sets and pieces. Collectors will pay top dollar for LEGO pieces as minuscule as minifigurines, like the limited-edition Mr.Gold, valued at over $6,000.

6. Breweriana

Collectors of breweriana, or beer-related memorabilia, seek items like antique beer cans, tap handles, and vintage signage that capture the spirit of beer production from a bygone era. Surprisingly, the market can also be highly lucrative, as evidenced by this Rheingold beer can that sold for over $10,000 at auction in 2019.

In 2021, a rare Meissen mantel clock case from the 18th century fetched over $1.5 million at a Sotheby’s auction, reflecting the high demand for these historical pieces.

Surprisingly, vintage Zippo lighters are a major collectible. Most collectors look for military-issue, advertising editions, or lighters that have a specific serial number. A gifted lighter from John F. Kennedy was sold for over $4,000 at auction in 2010 — no chump change for a little Zippo.

High-end perfume brands, or those from limited-edition releases, can be incredibly valuable to collectors. For example, a Rene Lalique perfume bottle from the early 1900s sold for over $100,000 in Paris due to its intricate design and rarity. These collectible perfume bottles are cherished for their craftsmanship and aesthetic beauty that represent fashion and art history.

In February 2024, an original pressing of The Beatles’ “White Album,” which was owned by John Lennon, sold for over £128,000 (about USD$162,447) at auction. Joes, Star Wars figurines, and even board games, can be highly valuable — especially if they’re part of a limited release or are still in their original packaging. Collectors often cherish these items for the nostalgia they evoke, linking them to fond childhood memories. One clear example: This 1959 first-edition Barbie that sold for $27,450 at auction in 2023.

Meet the Writer

Matt has spent over the last 8 years as both a writer and editor, working in Seattle and Brooklyn, where he is now based. He loves escaping the tirelessly fast pace of the “Mad Apple” that is NYC by taking walks and runs through parks where he’s able to catch up on the latest tea about society from the city’s ever chatty, always hungry, occasionally maniacal, pigeons. They always have a lot to say. When he’s not taking his urban nature strolls, or dutifully combing the deepest rabbit holes of the internet to find the content that’s worth sinking your mind’s teeth into, he’s likely holed up at a dark-lit dive bar with a new book and/or some friends, or just easily he could be on the hunt for the next addition to his steadily growing plant family.
