The early 1930s were not exactly an easy time to be alive. The Great Depression had changed the way millions of Americans worked, lived, and thought about the future. Yet photographs from the period often reveal something more interesting than hardship alone. People still found ways to carry on with ordinary life, even when ordinary life had become much harder.
That is part of what makes these images so worth looking at. They show a version of the 1930s that can be difficult to picture from statistics and history books alone. There are moments of struggle, but also plenty of personality and everyday life tucked into the details. More than anything, these photographs show what the decade looked like to the people who were actually there.
