“Counting other people’s money” is typically considered taboo, but it does have some utility: Knowing the household income of specific demographics can guide your ability to negotiate a raise, and even help you choose the best place to live.

We rarely turn down a chance to look at state-by-state financial statistics. Sometimes they’re actionable, in the case of the best states for millennials, working moms, and remote workers. Sometimes they’re informative, helping us know how much money is needed to retire in each state. And sometimes they’re just plain juicy, such as how much income is needed to be “rich” in each state, or where the billionaires live.

In this case, using data from GOBankingRates, we rounded up the median household income in every state—and broke those numbers into three distinct age buckets. So now you know exactly where you stand—and maybe where you should be standing instead.
