Photos That Show How America’s Truckers Kept the Country Moving

A man in a flat cap and pinstripe suit leans against a vintage delivery truck, looking toward the camera. The truck’s door is open, revealing part of the interior and a mounted milk bottle crate.

Before highways crisscrossed the nation and GPS made getting around as easy as pie, America’s truck drivers were the backbone of the road. Putting in endless miles across long-haul drives, behind every wheel sat someone who labored away to keep towns supplied, factories running, and families fed — often without a bit of recognition.

From coffee breaks at roadside diners to burning the midnight oil, these 17 old photos celebrate the men and women who quite literally kept America moving.
