Gas lines, resignation headlines, and mood rings — 1974 wasn’t subtle. The year cracked open with the country deep in recession and ended with a president stepping down for the first time in U.S. history. In between, Americans tuned into “All in the Family,” tuned out during Watergate hearings, and tried to make sense of it all with pop psychology and disco. From bell-bottoms to hippies, these pictures of 1974 transport us back in time.
