The ’80s were a golden age for horror. Watching scary movies was a rite of passage, thanks to the help of VHS rentals, sleepovers, and late-night cable marathons. Some had us clutching pillows, others had us laughing through the gore, but they all became the kind of films everyone seemed to watch at least once. From haunted suburbs to masked killers and creepy dolls, here are the horror classics that defined the decade.

1. ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ (1984)

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you … even if you’ve never seen “Nightmare on Elm Street,” chances are, you know who Freddy Krueger is. And you definitely know he claimed his victims via their nightmares — a refreshing, original plot line in the horror world.

2. ‘Friday the 13th’ (1980)

A poster for "Friday the 13th" shows a group of people in the woods, framed by a silhouette holding a bloody knife. The moon shines above rows of trees. The text reads, "Friday the 13th" and "A 24 hour nightmare of terror.

Before Freddy was a household name, Jason was the most talked-about madman. Treading through the woods with his machete after innocent campers at Camp Crystal paved the way for slasher flicks.

3. ‘The Shining’ (1980)

Listen, very few people can play a psychopath as brilliantly as Jack Nicholson, and “The Shining” is Exhibit A. “Here’s Johnny!” is pretty much all we need to say.

4. ‘Poltergeist’ (1982)

A young child sits in front of a glowing TV screen with hands pressed against it; a stuffed toy lies beside her. The word "POLTERGEIST" appears in large blue letters above. The scene is tinted blue and mysterious.

Creepy clowns, static TVs, and “They’re heeereee.” This one turned the suburban dream into a haunted nightmare.

5. ‘Child’s Play’ (1988)

Some people find dolls creepy. We’re pretty sure Chucky is to blame for that. Still, as scary as “Child’s Play” was, its campiness offered a smidgeon of comedic relief to cushion the blow.

6. ‘The Lost Boys’ (1987)

Cool vampires, a killer soundtrack, and that iconic boardwalk vibe. “The Lost Boys” is probably as beloved for its style as it is for the actual plot line and characters.

7. ‘Pet Sematary’ (1989)

Ah, yes, the Stephen King movie that made cat people question turning to dogs instead. Until they remembered Cujo, that is.

8. ‘Christine’ (1983)

Some people are obsessed with their cars — they name them, get them a customized license plate, and wax them religiously. Just be careful you don’t spoil your ride to the point of it becoming possessed and overcome with deadly jealousy like Christine.

9. The ‘Halloween’ Movies

Michael Myers kept stalking through the ’80s, trading babysitter suburbs for hospitals and beyond. The mask, the music, the slow walk — no matter how many renditions of “Halloween” we were given, he was always terrifying.

10. ‘Fright Night’ (1985)

Your neighbor is a vampire and no one believes you — classic ’80s setup. This one was particularly beloved by horror fans who enjoyed the campier side of scary movies.

11. ‘Cujo’ (1983)

You remember Cujo. That sweet dog gone rabid is somehow one of the scariest things ever put on film. The trapped-in-the-car tension is brutal.

12. ‘Return of the Living Dead’ (1985)

Zombies plus punk rock plus gallons of gore. This movie also gave us the iconic line: “Braaaains!”

13. ‘Re-Animator’ (1985)

A man in a lab coat, glasses, and holding a glowing syringe stands behind a table with a severed head, scientific equipment, and beakers. Bold text reads: “RE-ANIMATOR …It will scare you to pieces.”

A mad scientist bringing the dead back to life? Gruesome, gross, and totally cult-worthy. This was midnight movie gold.
