Dinner in middle-class homes has always been a mirror of the times — sometimes decadent and hearty, other times cheap and easy, and always depending on what life looked like beyond the table. In the 1950s, it might’ve been meatloaf with a side of peas, served with kids still in their school clothes. By the ’80s and ’90s, families were heating up TV dinners or stirring boxed mac and cheese as life got busier and convenience took the front seat.
