Here’s What Suburban Backyards Looked Like Before Fancy Decks and Pools Took Over

A family enjoys an outdoor picnic in a backyard, with a man grilling burgers, a woman serving food, and children gathered around a table covered with a red-checkered cloth.

Before Pinterest-perfect patios and curated backyard aesthetics, there was a time when middle-class, suburban outdoor living had its own kind of charm. From slip ‘n slides to iconic patio furniture, these photos are the perfect example of what backyard life looked like years ago.

1. It Doesn’t Get Much More ’70s Than This

What. A. SET. The green, yellow, and white floral pattern epitomizes the 1970s, the tinge of rust epitomizes the middle class, and the fringe just sets it all off.

2. Lawn Flamingos!

The most iconic lawn ornament. We said what we said.

3. The Table and Chairs Everyone Had in the ’90s

From suburban patios to budget hotels, these plastic tables and chairs were everywhere we looked in the ’90s.

4. It Wasn’t a Backyard Barbecue Without a Checkered Tablecloth

A group of nine people, including children and adults, are sitting at a picnic table covered with a red-and-white checkered tablecloth, sharing a meal outside a brown house on a sunny day.

Was it even a backyard barbecue if Mom didn’t pull out one of her vinyl red checkered tablecloths to cover the picnic table?

5. The Swings Facing Each Other Were Elite

Three children play on a colorful backyard playground set with swings, a slide, and a seesaw. Two children are on the seesaw, waving at a boy sitting at the top of the slide. The playground is set on green grass.

The wood playground sets were reserved for the families with loads of money, while middle-class backyards sported rinky-dink metal playsets that were just as fun.

6. Sprinkler Days Were the Best Days

Two children play with a garden hose spraying water in a sunny backyard. Patio chairs and hanging plants are on the covered porch, and toys are scattered on the grass in front of a single-story house.

We did not need in-ground pools to cool off on hot summer days in the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s. A sprinkler got the job done just fine.

7. Fun With the Neighborhood Kids

A group of children in colorful clothing poses and plays in a grassy backyard. Some are standing, one is lounging on a white lawn chair, and a house with a porch and a fenced yard appear in the background.

Neighborhood kids basically just took turns gathering at different backyards during the summertime.

8. These Lawn Chairs Were an Accident Waiting to Happen

Four white lawn chairs with pastel blue, green, pink, and beige stripes sit in a row on bright green artificial grass, with gravel and some greenery visible in the background.

Seriously, if you ever got your foot stuck between the straps of one of these bad boys, you get it. The bright side of these strappy chairs was that they were really easy to clean with a little Fantastik and a paper towel, which kept Mom happy.

9. The Epitome of a ’90s Dad

A man wearing sunglasses, a blue shirt, denim shorts, and white sneakers grills food on a barbecue outside on a wooden deck next to a gray-paneled house.

The shades. The ‘stache. The polo. The braided leather belt on jorts. The tube socks. The white shoes. The watch. Sheesh, this grilling dad couldn’t be a more accurate picture of the ’90s if he tried.

10. Dad Mowing the Lawn Topless

A shirtless man mows tall grass with a push lawnmower next to a chain-link fence; laundry hangs on a clothesline behind him in a sunny, suburban backyard.

The clothes on the line behind this guy really round out the vibe.

11. Slip n’ Slides!

A young child in red shorts sits on a yellow slip-and-slide on a grassy lawn, with two other children standing in the background. Trees and open space are visible behind them.

Slip n’ slides were the MVP of middle-class summers. Bonus points if Mom let you borrow some dish soap to slide a little faster.

12. Cousins on Cousins

A group of ten children sit and stand together on a swing outdoors. Some wear athletic clothes and striped socks, and most have serious expressions. The background shows grass and a light-colored building.

Back in the day, our family barbecues consisted of the entire family. That’s all 13 cousins, all our uncles and aunts, and anyone in between.

13. Tube Socks and Nikes

A young boy wearing a blue cap, striped shirt, red shorts, and striped socks stands next to a red bicycle in a sunny yard. A white pickup truck and a metal shed are visible in the background.

Birkenstocks and ankle socks might be today’s teens’ favorite footwear in the summer, but back in the ’80s it was all about tube socks and Nike sneakers.

14. The Official Pool Lounger of the ’80s …

A blue and white striped folding lounge chair with a metal frame sits on a dark pavement against a reddish-brown brick wall. The chair's fabric is frayed and broken in several places.

We can still feel the back sweat.

15. … And Perhaps the Most Iconic Lawn Chair of All-Time

Two metal lawn chairs with woven plastic seats and backs in green, yellow, orange, and white are placed on grass near blooming white flowers and a tree.

We all had these. Every single one of us.

16. The Hose Was the Only Place To Grab a Drink …

A young person in a gray t-shirt and jeans stands barefoot on grass, drinking water directly from a garden hose in a green backyard with trees and plants.

Remember not being allowed in the house for anything at all during the summer? Our moms would’ve never purchased bottled water back then. The hose was the only answer.

17. … Unless You Stumbled Upon a Lemonade Stand

Four children pose in front of a homemade wooden lemonade stand on a driveway, with two kids inside the stand and two sitting outside drinking from cups. A van and house are visible in the background.

Of course, if you lived in a middle-class neighborhood, you might have put up a lemonade stand a time or two.

18. The Only Pool We Needed

These pools came in a box, filled up with the hose within minutes, and were cheap enough that our parents could just throw them out when summer was over. They were the most practical pools around.

19. We Can Feel Our Thighs Burning Just Looking at This Picture

A bright red metal chair with white armrests sits on a grassy lawn in front of a garden bed, with small American flags and potted plants visible in the background.

Yeah, these babies were HOT under the sun.
